Boise State University in Idaho will be closed on June 19th in honor of Juneteenth National Independence Day. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when approximately 200,000 enslaved individuals in Texas learned of their freedom, which had actually been granted by the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
Those affiliated with Boise State University are encouraged to visit the Idaho Black History Museum located in the former St. Paul Baptist Church Building in Julia Davis Park. The museum, reopening on June 25th, is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It showcases the history and culture of Black Americans from Idaho and beyond. To learn more about the museum's 25th Anniversary, follow IBHM on social media and visit ibhm.org.
